I've been to the British Virgin Islands about 10 times, and there is a lot left for me to discover. Whether you're a first-timer or returning sailor Glenn Harman has served up a wonderfully informative Glenn's Guide to the British Virgin Islands. Glenn is a USCG and RYA licensed yacht captain, working for private yachts and charter companies. He's cruised these islands for more than 13 years.
It is no small task to get to these islands and Glenn gives us a wise preparation list, (finally learned about clothespins!) decoding where to fly in to, ferry schedules and customs and immigration info. His chapter on Provisioning is particularly enlightening to help you be the most economical in purchasing and planning meals.
To get a mooring ball at your next stop requires you to get there before everyone else. Glenn does make the case for not using your own anchor. Also, because of the coral reefs (this is my assessment) no one seems to sail after sunset. It's much easier to arrive in daylight, fix a Dark 'n Stormy and discuss dinner plans.
Glenn has covered all the islands with well-researched and useful details - "The Saba Rock moorings include a free bag of ice and top-up of your fresh water tank!" Nothing like free ice and water! Another reason to not use your own anchor! Activities, and the best places to do them, will definitely help sort out your itineraries as you make your way through the islands.
Taste-tempting recipes towards the end are wonderful. The Pineapple Crumble sounds like the end to a perfect evening. And I never did know how to slice a mango! The collection of phone numbers and links in the back keep everything in one place. And the book is small enough to carry in your bag during the day. Pictures are colorful and illuminate the topics. There's even a page for you to add your own notes.
Having met Glenn over a few drinks, I can vouch for his easy-going manner and love of the islands. You would be lucky to have Glenn be your captain, but having this book will help you visit the islands like a local with good knowledge and also as a responsible visitor. www.glennsguidetothebvi.com
